Why protection matters
Steal Fish Eggs explicitly allows players to steal fish from other players. Your collection is part of a shared-server game. The official API lists a six-player maximum; that is a server capacity, not a guarantee that six people are present.
The public description does not explain a permanent lock, shield duration, or theft cooldown. Check the live interface before depending on any protection feature.
Before a longer trip
- Look at current activity around your base.
- Identify which fish matter most to your income or collection.
- Read any protection prompt that actually exists in your game.
- Avoid assuming an empty-looking area will stay quiet.
Keep early trips manageable
Shorter trips let you check your collection more often while learning the server. Treat that as a planning choice, not a guaranteed defense. Other players may still interact with your fish.
If a protection upgrade appears, compare its stated effect and cost with what it would protect. Do not buy a supposed defense based only on another player's message.
If a fish goes missing
Check the collection and current game state before concluding what happened. If you observed another player taking it, rebuild with a route you can repeat and reassess how long you leave the base unattended.

Plan around the loss you are trying to avoid
| Target | What to inspect | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Income dependence | Does one fish account for much of your measured earnings? | Before a long trip, consider how losing that contribution would delay your next purchase. |
| Collection goal | Which fish has a trait you are specifically collecting? | Keep a record of its name and traits so you can identify what is missing or changed. |
| Visible protection | Does the current interface state an effect, condition, or expiry? | Read all of it. A button or visual effect alone does not establish permanent protection. |
| Long absence | Will a distant egg attempt keep you away for several runs' worth of time? | Compare that goal with shorter trips that let you inspect the collection more often. |
Recalculate after the collection changes
If a fish disappears, the old income estimate may no longer describe your collection. Measure earnings again before planning the next upgrade. Returning to a known collection route gives you a practical recovery objective without relying on a replacement of exactly the same rarity.
For a hypothetical budget, reducing income from 20 to 10 money per second doubles the wait for the same remaining amount. This is arithmetic, not a claim about a particular fish. It explains why protecting an income goal and chasing a new collectible may call for different trip lengths.
Questions about this step
Does staying near the base prevent theft?
The official description confirms player theft but does not establish that proximity blocks it. Shorter trips are a way to check the collection more often, not a verified shield.
Can the wiki recover a stolen fish?
The wiki has no access to game inventories. For a suspected bug, keep the time, game identity, and relevant evidence and use the developer's current support route.
